Anime All Stars!

There are three reasons I create pop culture art. I get paid to draw a commission for someone, People find me at comic cons and ask me often enough for the same characters, or I just enjoy the subject matter and have fun with it. This image falls into the second and first category. Sadly, I do not have the time to draw as often as I'd like, so I can't dedicate time to draw each of these fun characters individually. The answer then is to draw them together when you can't find time for each one!

This is the first time I am drawing most, if not all, of these characters, so please forgive my interpretation. It was find trying to compose this piece and seems to get a lot of smiles and conversations started at comic con's, so I am glad I did it. My favorite were Luffy, Saitama, and The Elric Brothers. Hopefully you like this as well, and if you'd like a print, feel free to email me at thelearningcurv@gmail.com for your copy today!

Sailor Moon

Tackling a ‪Sailor Moon‬ ‪illustration‬... after watching the show, I wanted to make the girliest drawing I could come up with. I don't know if I've ever done an illustration just because it was a ‪fun idea‬. I am usually more gung ho about doing a piece because of the characters themselves. Other than Jem and My Little Pony, I don't know if there's another ‪‎girly‬ character I'd be so comfortable drawing as Sailor Moon. I don't know why but I think of girls screaming, high pitched sounds, bright lights filled with pinks, purples and fuchsias, stars and fireworks. In essence that's what fueled this image. And then there's those ‪big eyes‬ and a character named ‪Tuxedo Mask‬ as‪ ‎the love interest‬. Nuff said?=]

Avatar State

I was fortunate enough to find out about a Avatar gallery exhibition that the creators of the show were putting on and they invited fans to try to be a part of the exhibit. I ended up being inspired to do the Korra piece you see below. Since I had done a season 1 Korra piece, I felt, I needed to do a Aang piece as well which you see below too. I can't get enough of these shows and am so glad to see them continue. I hope I can get my hands on Season 4 of Korra asap!

AvenueQ

As I begin to grow as an artist I am entering a new phase of my career. After creating my book, I've become more streamlined with my art direction. I was told before that my work was very clean, but I've made an effort to be even more so.  I've taken a cue from animation and children's book illustration and will be adding my comic experience along with that to begin new body of work. I have a lot of ideas for illustrations that will look really great in this style and I can't wait to share them with you...

Thanks for coming along with me on my journey as always!

A Reason to Smile Prev

I am well on my way to finishing up my children's book, "A Reason to Smile" and I've posted 3 pages for you to enjoy. Once the colors I will be launching a kickstarter, with t-shirts, postcards, book marks and so much more to entice you to get your very own copy. I hope you like what you see so far and I'll update you all soon!

Gotta Catch'em All!

This is probably the brightest piece I have EVER done..... I figured since I was going to be drawing so many characters, I'd design the layout as though it would be a gatefold cover. Needless to say this was a challenge, doing this many characters that I'd never drawn before.

The more I draw, the more I want to challenge myself to do things I think I can't or aren't good at. I want to make my own book (it's written and is almost fully illustrated) and I remembered doing this piece since it has a similar whimsical air to it. I figured this would be a great piece to practice on to get myself ready for that. I got the logo from www.gamingbus.com so shout out to them for having such a good copy of the logo.

I hope you guys enjoyed these, and here's a listing of the pokemon who are present:

1. Koffing                                        12. Arcanine

Power Rangers celebrates 20 years of being broadcasted in America! Seeing the cosplayers at comic con who pay tribute to this show are always so amazingly done, and as always I was inspired to make this due to the love they continue to get!

Below is the preparation I had in creating this piece. I wanted to get as much movement here as possible and continue to work scale and perspective into my work.  I hope you enjoy.

Goku FTW!

In my travels across the country, there were many who enjoyed and debated the question... who wins between Goku and Superman?  I've always looked at it as a battle that would take 5 episodes. The end result would have the two being extremely exhausted and deciding it'd be best to go out for pizza, with a splash image of them trying to out eat each other with Chichi and Lois heading the cheering section of supporting cast members.

That said, most fans feel Goku would win... so this is for them.

Lady & Hoots

Continuing in the cartoony vain, here is Lady & Hoots, a commission created for a client who wanted his little cousins turned into superhero types on a comic styled cover. The nicknames of the children are in the title and I was asked to create their looks in the theme of their nicknames.

I had so much fun designing the boys costume that I had to do some more drawings of it, in a slightly different way to separate it from the look of the commission so that it was my own.  I tried to make it simpler  and easier to replicate, giving the original commissioned piece more detail and more bang for the buck.

Below is the final color version next to the original inked piece.

Tink runnin wit los Loco's=]

I was commissioned to create an illustration with Tinkerbell being an engineer, with the conductors suit and the Steam Engine being the two other things in the mix that needed to be there. The client told me the man that she was giving this to took down his favorite picture in his office and replaced it with this=] I was very honored to hear that!

Sometimes I almost wish I only had to do pencil drawings with regards to commissions, they hold so much life in them.  I will always enjoy doing illustrations though, I can't help but be happy seeing the end result, knowing that my mind and body was able to begin a concept and see it through to create this final product!

DBZ style!

Nappa and Vegeta, two characters from the Dragon Ball Z universe who struck fear in their fellow characters and viewers alike!  When i first saw Nappa and what he could do, I felt overcome with a feeling of seeing someone who was like Superman and the Hulk combined! When Vegeta destroyed him because he felt he was an embarrassment to the Saiyan race, he sparked even more fear in all!  Someone so small had so much power. It made for very dramatic, violent cartooning and we all loved it!

Here are the inks for the illustration.  It was nice doing a drawing that didn't need much rendering, I love when the color can do it for me=]

Kamen Rider Vs. Spider-man

Kamen Rider Vs. Spider-man..... Kamen Rider is similar to the Power Rangers and has had many incarnations throughout the years.  This incarnation is Kamen Rider, The First.  Check wikipedia for more info.

This was commissioned to me at the Supermega Show and Comic extraveganza.  It was nice to be asked to do something that is within my comfort zone yet off base as well to challenge me and bring out something in my work I have yet to do, i.e. so much movement and choreographing. I wanted to create a sense of balance and what better way of donig that than using the Ying &Yang motif.

If you are interested in getting a costume illustration done, send me an e-mail at  thelearningcurv@gmail.com

I have a page on thelearningcurv.deviantart.com and see that a lot of the artists on there have spots over here so I thought I'd try it out and see what all the hub bub is about. I hope to be uploading some art sometime soon, and would love to hear what any and all of you have to say about my attempts to create.....here's a taste of what you'll see from me.....
