Teen Titans GO!

I was commissioned a while back to create the a Teen Titans Go! illustration but with the faces of the friends of the person who commissioned me in the place of the originals. Seeing the opportunity to have this piece as a good illustration in my portfolio,  I drew the originals, saved the pencils in Photoshop and then drew the commission as it was requested. When I inked the piece, I scanned that, deleted the faces, and digitally inked over the older pencils. I now had a piece of art that satisfied the younger people in my audience to go along with the original Titan's piece I have as well.

When I saw how much space I left in the art, I realized I could make the piece more dynamic by tilting it and cropping the piece around the key figures. I have the artist Gabriel Picolo to thank for that. He's done some AMAZING Titan's inspired art and it's inspired me to do more slice of life pieces like this!

Email me at thelearningcurv@gmail.com if you'd like your very own custom commission!

TeenTitans

DC Comics has done an amazing job with it's animated incarnations of it's properties. When the Teen Titans animated show began running on Cartoon Network, it was a hit of fans young and old! Sadly they decided to take that model and use it to focus on the younger age market. As much as I do enjoy the silliness of the new one, I miss the original series. The absence of that incarnation brought me to want to do a tribute to them as they would be now, as a adults. Here's to George Perez and Marv Wolfman, who originally created this group we have come to love!

Superman

Whenever I think of ‪‎Superman, ‬I see him as a calming presence. One of the things I enjoyed about the original movie was seeing how much he smiled, how often he was happy to be able to do the good he did. That movie, more than any ‪‎comic‬, has influenced my view of the ‪Man of Steel‬. I am happy to say I believe I've finally captured that in an ‪illustration‬.

SHAZAM

I've loved Captain Marvel since I saw a cartoon with him and his family back in the 80's. I always found the idea of a kid becoming something so powerful and being responsible enough to wield that power very amazing and inspiring.

I try to draw correlations between characters and drawing them and did so with Thor and the good Captain and as much as I enjoyed drawing it, I didn't like the outcome. I did it on two sheets within my sketchbook and felt the piece could be more dynamic. The bug was in me to draw Marvel again and so I did throughout my time at Awesome Con while it was slow.

In between projects I got to color this bad boy and get it show ready. I loved playing with the colors and hope to do the Thor/Shazam crossover again soon=]

2006

I was working consistently at the Children's Aid Society at this point and I was busy trying to figure out where life was taking me.  I continued drawing as often as possible, but some goals had shifted a bit. I was spending a lot of time learning how to play the Vs. System card game that was similar to Yugi-Oh, but had Marvel and DC characters as their players. I studied the game a good deal and either won or placed highly in a few tournaments, and just had a great deal of fun with the game, so naturally I wanted to bring my artistic talents into this new passion.  I started drawing images I felt would work well in the card game I began to love so much.

I was also entering a stage where I was making t-shirts of my designs to market myself a bit more. The spider-man image at the top of this page was my very first shirt and, years later, I was able to show it to Spider-man legend, John Romita Sr.... He gave me the most immense compliment I have yet to receive in which he said if I were around when he was drawing Spider-man, he'd have hired me to do his backgrounds! The validation i felt after hearing that was extremely uplifting and pushed me to keep pushing towards my goal of making art my life.

Goku FTW!

In my travels across the country, there were many who enjoyed and debated the question... who wins between Goku and Superman?  I've always looked at it as a battle that would take 5 episodes. The end result would have the two being extremely exhausted and deciding it'd be best to go out for pizza, with a splash image of them trying to out eat each other with Chichi and Lois heading the cheering section of supporting cast members.

That said, most fans feel Goku would win... so this is for them.

Sinestro's Glory

A while back, I did a illo about the Guardians of the Light in the DC universe and i wanted to do a new illustration with one of the characters, Sinestro.  He was at one time considered the greatest Green Lantern ever and at one time was their worst enemy.  The Sinestro Wars saw Sinestro at the height of his power and was one of the best stories to be done by DC comics. I wanted to spotlight him in the aftermath of him conquering the Green Lantern Corps above his home planet of Korugar.

This image began as a simple character study, since I want to do a single comic page staring him. As I was drawing it I wanted to make it more than just a sketch and decided an exercise in practice would be good.  I brought the conquering story into it and tested myself by drawing over 22 characters on one page in my sketchbook.  I also challenged myself by drawing characters in positions I've never drawn before.  Hopefully this is a successful image in your eyes as well, and now on to the next bit of art=]

Bleez Vs. Morrigan

I love mash ups!  I think it all started when I use to see the Superfriends, and how excited I was seeing all of my favorite superheroes together at one time.  From there I'd hear collaborations between hip-hop artists and that'd get me even more hype to draw or write my own rhymes and it just continued from there.

I have been trying to do things different and working with traditional media is one of those different things.  Below is the full painting I did with watercolors after applying a greytone to the image. Above is the finished product taken straight from the inks, brought into Photoshop CS5 and colored that way.

And here we have the inks straight from my sketchbook

Batman and Wolverine Team-up

I often get requests for both of these characters so rather than give them their own illustration each, i figured this would be a perfect way to kill two birds with one stone.... besides, I'd really love to see them in a story together, so I am sure you would too=] How do you think their philosophies would work together?  Would they be best friends, would they hate each other, would one look down on the other for going too far, or not far enough?  It'd definitely make for great action and high tension!

Mr. Cellophane shoulda been my name....

I have been a comic collector since right around 1990.  I remember my father taking me to the Big Apple Con in New York City and seeing X-Factor #1 and being astonished that I could afford to buy a #1 issue, which back then was a big deal (all of my comic book heads remember those days).  From then on I was trying my best to get as MANY comics as possible.  I remember going to  St. Marks Comics AND Forbidden Planet before they both changed locations (and FB yet again this year) and I remember as an adult having to put my 27th long box of comics into storage to make more room for more in my life than JUST comics.

I recently picked up Issue #0 of Green Lantern produced by Dc Comics.  It introduces a new human Green Lantern into the DC Universe mythos.  We have three White human Green Lanterns, one of African descent, and now, one of Middle Eastern descent.  I am happy for those of the Middle East who have come over to this country that have found a new way, and maybe a better way of life here in the States.  I congratulate them on the achievements that have been made here and appreciate the struggle they are going through.  Blacks and Latino's have gone through those same issues for hundreds of years here. I completely understand it being of Puerto Rican descent myself.  What I don't get is this: Why to this day are Latino's still left out and not taken seriously.

Just recently DC Nation, the animated segment of Cartoon Network that showcases the DC Universe in animated form, debuted an animated short featuring Vibe, a Puerto Rican character from Chicago.  It is a innaccurate simply caricature of our people. There is nothing within that animation of substance in depth or quality at all.  This was a perfect opportunity to revamp the character, get a Latin or even mroe specific, Puerto Rican writer to write the segment and bring Vibe our of obscurity and start him fresh.  they dropped the ball again..... I and other viewers posted about how offensive the short was to us and how disappointing it. Why did DC feel that this representation was okay to air?  It is extremely strange that they finally have good acting and writing for Blue Beetle (who is a perfect candidate to become a top tier character in their universe, who can represent Latino’s) and would show this offensive representation of Latin and inner city people.

Those of Middle Eastern Descent have had to deal with similar things in their own lands as we have in ours. Coming to this country feels as though it is an escape and new chance at life. Many times it is. What this may boil down to more than anything specifically for me, is jealousy..... My people have been going through what we have gone through for over 200 years.  To this day we still are fighting to be seen.  Granted, we've made strides and are more public than ever, but that is extremely hard fought and earned through everything that we have had to endure for so long.  To this day, Marvel only has one character in the spotlight of Latin descent, and he’s only half, and DC has yet to put any emphasis in making that happen.  I have worked in the elementary school systems and have seen just as many if not more books about the Middle East than I have about South America and the Caribbean. We are still not taken seriously.

At the end of the day, I’d love to see more representation of everyone, so NO one feels this way.  I would love to see everyone have a potential role model who looks like them, who comes from what they come from, and with whom they can identify with.  Some people see President Obama as a sham president and that he only won the election because he was Black….. thankfully that man was able to do more than simply be a Black man, because he showed that there is more to this world that what has been fed to us. Demand better from everything around you…. No one should be made to feel left out.

Bleez Vs. Morrigan

Red Lantern Vs. Video Game Queen....  I really do enjoy doing the battle images.  I always keep it pretty neutral, not picking a side one way or the other, but the concepts are always fun to put together.  Seeing a creature of rage go against someone who is very whimsical and playful is fun.  I got to play with the colors in this too being that this is entirely done by hand, so pushing the paint around brought me on an interesting journey....

Expect to see more pieces like this from me.....

Clash of the Titans!

Here we have Thor vs. Wonder Woman, and strangely enough those asked on Facebook went with Wonder Woman, but Thor wins out on Deviantart.com.... I go for Wonder Woman myself, I think it'd be nice to see her win this=]

New 52 2.0

Green Lantern, Black Canary and Green Arrow. I have been thankfully tasked with throwing these three together and what fun it was researching their looks!  I ended up seeing a funny picture of the Winchester Boys in the Green Arrow suit as a parody.... pretty funny=]

THE GRAND FINALE!!!!! Goku of Dragon Ball Z VS. Superman of the DC Universe!!!!! Wouldn't you pay to watch this episode?! Yea man, I would, I don't care if it took 40 minutes to finish!  Back in 2007, Wizard Magazine did an article about the characters from the East going against the characters from the West and the cover image was this fight.  I wanted to try my own hand at it and did an illustration back then. 5 years later I felt I needed to do a new version updating the drawing, and updating my skills.  This is the byproduct.  I hope you enjoy=]

Wonder Woman TV Redesign

As the pilot for the new Wonder Woman show was buzzing on the internet, I participated in a redesign contest for the outfit.  This is one of my few attempts at redesigning costumes.  I may try this some more later, it can be a pretty fun exercise.
